Spring 2021 Course Descriptions

Private Instruction Chinese language classes offer the teacher options of Instructor, Pro-Tutor, and Tutor. Class sessions may be purchased individually or in bundles for discounted rates. After the completion of registration and teacher placement, students are offered a free, 30 minute Initial Planning Meeting (IPM) with their teacher to discuss class goals, expectations, schedules, etc. before proceeding to payment and beginning classes.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This class is designed for students with very little to no Chinese language background. Students will start learning the language by getting to know the Pinyin System. By the end of the term, students will learn vocabulary, the correct pronunciations and tones to conduct basic conversation, as well as some simple Chinese characters.

 


Beginner 102

Placement test is necessary to complete registration for any students who have not graduated from Beginner 101. Any scores 15 and below on GW Confucius Institute Placement Test Level 1 will be placed into this level.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The HSK Level 5 Exam Preparation Course is an intensive course for pre-examination for students preparing for the HSK Level 5. A total of ten lessons, 1.5 hours per lesson. The teaching content is mainly based on the HSK Level 5 vocabulary. It is planned to select 540 common vocabulary from the 1200 vocabulary of the HSK Level 5 exam, with an average of 54 vocabulary per lesson, focusing on the topic, and combining the HSK Level 5 exam questions. Listening, reading, and writing to these more than 500 commonly used vocabulary to achieve the purpose of helping students master the meaning of words and use them flexibly. During the course of the course, it is planned to arrange two real-life simulation tests under the class. The purpose is to familiarize the students with the examination process, test questions, and self-testing their own Chinese proficiency.

Introduction to Characters & Calligraphy

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This class is an Introduction level course including the basic explanation of the common sense of Chinese Character and Calligraphy and the appreciation of the great works from famous calligraphers throughout history. In addition, students will have opportunity to experience and to practice writing with traditional brush with the instructor. By the end of the the course, students will have basic character knowledge for further study of Chinese reading and writing. Also, as a final project, students will come up with a complete work all by themselves. 

Chinese Watercolor Painting

Please note that instruction will be in both English and Chinese. Although no placement test is required, this class is best suited for students who have completed Beginner 101 or Beginner 102.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Chinese painting is a unique form of painting. It is an important part of Chinese traditional culture and art, and has a unique painting language and artistic style. This course will introduce students to the unique brush and ink techniques of Chinese painting, cultivate appreciation of paintings by different artists in China, and teach painting techniques of flowers and animals. Students will learn and enjoy the unique artistic style of Chinese painting and feel the inner spirit of Chinese "pen and ink".
