Chinese Arena–Chinese Debate Competition

Chinese Arena华语擂台–Chinese Debate Competition is held by GW Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) and GW Confucius Institute. This competition was exclusively open to all non-native Chinese speakers. Five teams competed on the stage; each team had two contestants and one Chinese mentor. The competition provided a stage not only for students to show their talents, but also for two cultures to exchange and combine.

This Halloween, the GW Confucius Institute invited local Chinese language learners to a very special Chinese Conversation Corner, filled with candy, ghost-stories and fun language practice. Instructor ZHANG Hongcheng introduced the traditional Chinese legend, Madame White Snake, which was made into a popular film in 2011, featuring Jet Li.

The GW Confucius Institute has received a generous donation of antique furniture dating from early & mid 20th century China from Dr. Liliane Willens. In her youth, Dr. Willens lived in Shanghai, China during the 1930s and 1940s. We are honored to accept such historical and special furniture, which will be placed in the GW Confucius Institute building. This reception will mark the formal introduction of the furniture into our offices, common spaces, and classrooms.

GW President LeBlanc Meets with NJU & Ministry of Education Delegations

The GW Confucius Institute hosted a meeting between the George Washington University President LeBlanc and Minister Counselor of Education, CEN Jianjun, an official of the Chinese Embassy in the United States, and Chancellor Zhu Qingbao, of Nanjing University. President LeBlanc thanked Chancellor Zhu for NJU’s continuous support towards GW Confucius Institute and other educational programs such as the annual Chinese Language Speech contest. President LeBlanc also received a delegation from the Chinese embassy led by Minister Counselor of Education, CEN Jianjun.

2017 Jiangsu Cup

Sunday, October 29, 2017 - 8:30am to 2:30pm

The 7th Annual Jiangsu Cup Chinese Speech Contest for the greater Washington Metropolitan area was held at George Washington University on Sunday, October 29, 2017. The 15 participants who competed in the final round came form 9 universities in DC, Maryland and Virginia. All participants in the final round of competition earned a scholarship for study or traveling to Jiangsu Province, China. Gold Award winners received scholarship to study full-time at Nanjing University. Silver Award winners will go on an all expenses-paid trip to Jiangsu Province. Bronze Award winners receive a partial scholarship to study Chinese at Nanjing University.

Papercutting Demonstrations at Seaton Elementary

The GW CI Instructors LIU Zhi and ZHANG Hongcheng went to Seaton Elementary to teach local children about the beautiful art of Chinese Paper-cutting. They instructed over 110 students from K4 to 6th grade. Everyone had a great time and the students loved their designs!

The 10th Annual Conference on U.S.-China Economic Relations And China’s Economic Development

The Institute for International Economic Policy (IIEP) hosted it's 10th annual Conference on China's Economic Development and U.S.-China Economic & Political Relations. The US - China relationship is now second to none in importance for international economic relations and policy and accordingly is a major focus of the IIEP. The centerpiece of this initiative is their annual conference, which has become one of the premier events of its type. The GW Confucius Institute is happy to co-sponsor such an initiative by the Institute for International Economic Policy.
