Movie Night: New Dragon Gate Inn

Wednesday, March 22, 2017 - 7:30pm to 9:30pm

The GW Confucius Institute will screen several classic Chinese movies throughout the spring. Following the movie screenings, there will be an open discussion of the movie. This week, guests viewed A remake of the 1967 film, New Dragon Gate Inn, which was shot as a standard wuxia action thriller, with fast-paced action including martial arts, sword fighting and black comedy.

HSK & HSKK Testing

Sunday, March 19, 2017 - 9:00am to 4:30pm

The HSK & HSKK are Chinese proficiency tests, which will make you eligible for scholarships, fellowships and summer camps offered through the Confucius Institute. It is also required when direct enrolling into Chinese universities. The GW Confucius Institute will offer 3 paper & pencil HSK and HSKK test dates this spring.

GW GCC & GW CI Annual Dumpling Night

Friday, February 24, 2017 - 4:00pm to 6:30pm

On Friday, February 24, 2017, the GW Confucius Institute and the GW Global China Connection chapter held their annual Dumpling Night. The Global China Connection is a nonprofit organization for university students and young professionals of all nationalities looking to engage China’s emergence in the world. The GCC branch of the George Washington Campus strives to promote unity among all students who take an interest in Chinese culture, this includes international Chinese students, American Chinese students, American students and anyone else interested. This is the third time that the GW CI and the GCC have worked together for this event.

On February 9, 2017, the Hokins-Nanjing Center & the GW Confucius Institute co-sponsored an interactive student workshop & performance by American comedian in China and Fulbright Scholar alumni, Jesse Appell.

Chinese New Year Family Day at the Freer & Sackler Galleries

Sunday, February 5, 2017 - 11:00am to 5:00pm

On Sunday, February 5, 2017 the Freer & Sackler Galleries hosted a Chinese Lunar New Year celebration. Guests enjoyed a variety of activities and demonstrations throughout the day including: traditional paper cutting; bristle dolls; dough sculpting; a display of painting the inside of snuff bottles by Beijing Folk Artists; calligraphy demonstrations with the Confucius Institute at George Washington University; mask coloring and New Year card making with the Confucius Institute at George Mason University; an art scavenger hunt; plus red paper lantern making, coloring sheets, and rooster crafts. GW volunteers also helped provide essential translation for Chinese folk artists and guests.

Chinese New Year Family Day at the Kennedy Center

Saturday, February 4, 2017 - 10:30am to 4:00pm

On Saturday, February 4, 2017, the Kennedy Center will host a number of free activities highlighting Chinese culture for kids of all ages--including Beijing Opera stage makeup demonstration and costume dress-up with photos, lessons on Chinese paper cutting and calligraphy. The Kennedy Center, the Chinese Embassy Cultural Attaché, the GW Confucius Institute and other sponsors will work together to create this event.

The George Washinton University Lunar New Year Celebration

Monday, January 30, 2017 - 4:30pm to 7:00pm

On Thursday, January 30, 2017, the George Washington University hosted its annual university wide celebration, joined by the GW and the surrounding community. Attendees rung in the year of the rooster with a catered reception, welcoming remarks from GW leadership and entertaining student performances. This event is co-sponsored by the GW Confucius Institute, Sigur Center for Asian Studies, Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures, the Multicultural Student Services Center and the International Services Office.

Chinese New Year Festival at the Smithsonian American Art Museum: Highlighting the GW Confucius Institute

Saturday, January 28, 2017 - 11:00am to 3:00pm

Over 7,000 guests from the greater Washington area gathered in Kogod Courtyard to ring in the Chinese New Year. This year, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Chinese Embassy Cultural Attaché, the GW Confucius Institute and other sponsors once again worked together to host this successful family festival celebrating the year of the rooster.
