2016 Smithsonian American Art Museum Lunar New Year

On Saturday, January 30, 2016, over 7,000 guests from the greater Washington area gathered in Kogod Courtyard in the American Art Museum to ring in the year of the monkey and enjoy the annual Chinese New Year Family Festival. The Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Chinese Embassy Cultural Attaché, the GW Confucius Institute and other sponsors worked together to realize this extremely successful family festival, which offers local families an opportunity to experience and gain appreciation for Chinese culture. This is the second year for the GW Confucius Institute to participate.

The Chinese Embassy Cultural Attaché brought folk artists from Henan Province, China all the way to DC to demonstrate different forms of art, including paper cutting, painting and sculpting. GW Confucius Institute student ambassadors and GW student volunteers played a crucial role as translators for the artists, allowing locals to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and folk art. GWCI Instructor Ying Huang and GW students shared the beauty and artistry of Chinese calligraphy. Guests were eager to line-up for the chance to get their name written in Chinese characters by GWCI volunteers.

A highlight for many children was the chance to take a photo with GW Confucius Institute volunteer, Ms. Yuchen Wang, dressed as a panda. Even more thrilling for the guests was the presence of Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Cui Tiankai, who attended the event and dotted they eyes of the lions, a privilege which is often reserved for dignitaries. American families from diverse backgrounds enjoyed the chance to experience authentic Chinese art and watch the Lion Dance that signifies the beginning of the Chinese New Year.  The event was extremely successful in its mission, and the GW Confucius Institute is looking forward to future opportunities to promote the Chinese culture in the local community.
