7th Annual Conference on U.S.-China Economic Relations and China's Economic Development

The George Washington University Confucius Institute co-sponsors an annual conference on China's economic development and U.S.-China economic and political relations, which is organized by the Institute for International Economic Policy (IIEP). This conference has become one of the premier events of this type.


2014 100K Strong Foundation - Student Reunion Conference

Tuesday, November 18th - Wednesday, November 19th, 2014

Students from colleges around the country came together at the George Washington University on Tuesday and Wednesday with one goal: increasing the number of American students studying in China. On Tuesday, the foundation held a conference at the Jack Morton Auditorium that allowed Student Ambassadors to meet one another and encourage more cultural exchanges between China and the United States. The GW Confucius Institute co-sponsored this event.

2014 Jiangsu Cup Speech Competition

1st Symposium on International Chinese Textbook Development & CI Teaching Resource Utilization

The George Washington University Confucius Institute hosted the First Symposium on International Chinese Textbook Development & Confucius Institute Teaching Resources Utilization. The GW Confucius Institute Research Director Professor Xiaofei Kang moderated the symposium and offered opening remarks. Vice President Cheng Chongqing of Nanjing University also gave opening remarks. The speakers and presenters include Dean Aimin Cheng of the Institute for International Students at Nanjing University; Professor Yong Ho, who is the Chinese Language Supervisor at the United Nations; Professor Yuling Yang of the GW Confucius Institute, and Professor Phyllis Zhang of the East Asian Languages and Literatures at the GWU. Chinese language professors and instructors from the greater Washington, DC area attended the symposium and participated in the discussion.


One-Year Anniversary Celebration - Lunch Reception

The George Washington University Confucius Institute hosted a lunch reception to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the GW Confucius Institute and the tenth anniversary of founding the very first Confucius Institute globally. This event was part of the global celebration that took place simultaneously in all five continents. 


GW Faculty Panel Discussions on Academic & Research Experiences on China

On September 23rd and September 24th, 2014 the George Washington University Confucius Institute and the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences co-hosted the first of their two-day GW Faculty Panel Discussions on Academic & Research Experiences on China. Professor Xiaofei Kang, Research Director of the GW Confucius Institute, gave opening remarks and moderated the panels. At the end of the panel discussion, the floor was opened to the audience for questions and discussion with the panelists.


2nd Annual Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration

Over 100 guests came together to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival for the annual celebration co-hosted by the GW Confucius Institute, the GW Language Center and the Chinese Program of the East Asian Languages & Literatures Departments. We were happy to celebrate the holiday with friends and supporters on such a beautiful evening. Guests enjoyed moon-cakes, networked with others interested in China and learned about GW's exciting opportunities to study Chinese language and culture.


1st Open House Fall 2014

The GW Confucius Institute kicked-off its fall semester with an open house, which offered guests an opportunity to meet our three new faculty members,  learn about upcoming GW Confucius Institute programming, network with others and practice Chinese language. Our open houses will continue throughout the year, so we hope that you visit us for future open houses if you were unable to come to our kick-off.


Summer Tour of China

June 22nd - July 5th, 2014

This June, several GW Students will travel with the GW Confucius Institute as they tour Beijing, Shanghai, Wuxi, Suzhou and Nanjing. Not only did students enjoy visiting some of China’s most famous landmarks, but they also gained a deeper understanding of Chinese culture as expert guides explained the cultural meaning, symbolism and historical context of these important locations. Through experiencing local cuisine, traditional cultural performances and visiting manufacturing facilities of traditional Chinese arts, such as cloisonné and brocade, students gained a much deeper appreciation for Chinese culture. Many expressed the great impact these activities had and the importance of experiencing a culture firsthand. All the students expressed gratitude for the amazing opportunity to tour China and an interest in continuing to learn about Chinese history, language and culture once they returned to America.

2014 Literary Forum:  Chinese Ethnic Minority Writers & North American Counterparts

The GW Confucius Institute is excited to host this literary forum for Chinese ethnic minority writers and their North-American counterparts. The round-table discussion will include significant topics such as the international significance of the literature of Chinese ethnic minority writers, multi-national writing in Chinese literature, the glory of women in the literature of Chinese ethnic minorities and defending Chinese ethnic minority cultures. This event is not open to the public. Three Cities in the Life of Xiong Shili

The GW Confucius Institute is excited to have scholar Dr. Ed Connelly join us for an evening talk on Xiong Shili. This lecture uses the three cities - Wuhan, Nanjing, and Beijing - to represent three stages in the life of the founder of New Confucianism, Xiong Shili, as well as the Confucian ideals that each of these three stages in Xiong’s life represents, namely patriotism, self-study and self-cultivation, and reform through education.

Chinese Linguistics Workshop at GW

The GW Confucius Institute is excited to sponsor this workshop, covering such topics as Second Language Acquisition, Phonology, Semantics, and Global Chinese & Minority Languages. Many linguists in the Washington DC metro area share common research interests in Chinese linguistics. Thus the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures of the George Washington University wanted to bring local linguists together to exchange research ideas, with a view to engender collaborations. Local Artists Donate Artwork to the Confucius Institute

Although the snow had not yet completely melted, the first bloom of spring came to the GW Confucius Institute. On March 5th, 2014, the Confucius Institute welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Ji, local artists specializing in Chinese traditional painting and calligraphy. They kindly donated artwork featuring paper-cuts, couplets, seal cutting prints, and many types of traditional painting and calligraphy styles. View Photo Gallery.

GW Confucius Institute Hosts Lunar New Year Celebration

 With a resounding “Ni Hao” [hello in Chinese] and a toast to the “Year of the Horse”, Dean Ben Vinson greeted guests gathered for the celebratory launch on January 30 of the Chinese Lunar New Year, which is marked by 15 days of celebration on the traditional East Asian calendar. Among those in attendance were guests from the GW Confucius Institute, the Sigur Center for Asian Studies, the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL), and student performers. 

 


World Bank Chinese Program Invites GW Confucius Institute to Spring Festival Gathering

2014年1月28日,乔治华盛顿大学孔子学院邀请世界银行中文部主任董瑞花老师前来孔院访问,商讨双方合作意向。1月29日,应董老师邀请,孔子学院中方院长郭茜教授跟项目协调员Molly Mroch 一起,去世界银行参加春节聚会,观看世界银行中文班学员的表演,跟他们一起讨论汉语学习情况并向他们介绍乔治华盛顿大学孔子学院。


School Without Walls Senior High School - Tour of GW Confucius Institute

2014年1月15日,乔治华盛顿大学孔子学院接待了第一批到访的中学师生。他们来自“The School Without Walls Senior High School”,是该校学习中文的学生和一名中文老师。该中学位于首都华盛顿中心,在乔治华盛顿大学校区内,与孔子学院只相隔一条街区。孔子学院中方院长郭茜教授接待了他们。郭院长介绍了孔院的情况,带他们参观了孔院,还给他们上了一次特殊的汉语课。学生们积极踊跃地用汉语来了解孔院及有关中国的情况,也翻阅了孔院的汉办赠书。孔院赠予每位学生汉办文化用品-中文书签,勉励他们好好学习中文。之后根据部分学生的意愿,安排他们担任孔院春节庆祝等活动的小志愿者。
